Biography

Describing themselves as "North London's favorite grungey-indie superdupergroup," Paintings of Ships are a nautically obsessed trio whose purposefully ragged, guitar-based sound recalls some of the touchstone acts of late '80s and early '90s. Paintings of Ships were formed the early weeks of 2009 by Daniel Clancy (guitar and lead vocals), Catherine Wilson (bass and vocals), and Matt Hill (drums). Embracing the dynamics and melodic attack of Nirvana, the noisy soundscapes of Sonic Youth, and the dreamy meanderings of the shoegaze crowd, Paintings of Ships began gigging regularly around London and the surrounding area, and putting Hill's engineering talents to good use, they recorded their debut EP in his front room, which doubled as his home studio. The four-song Shore for Sure was released on CD and as a digital download in 2010, and by the end of that year, the band headed into a recording studio to begin work on their first full-length album, English Weather.
